Human trafficking is an issue that often lurks in the shadows, unknown to the general public. On 30th July 2024 - World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, we had the privilege of speaking with Pallabi Ghosh, the founder and director of the Impact and Dialogue Foundation. Her organization is at the forefront of efforts to prevent, rescue, rehabilitate, and empower survivors of human trafficking.

Pallabi's journey into the world of human trafficking advocacy began with a personal experience—witnessing the disappearance of a girl from her village during her childhood. This incident sparked her curiosity and concern, leading her to delve deeper into the issue. In 2010, Pallabi uncovered the harsh realities of human trafficking, which propelled her to establish the Impact and Dialogue Foundation. Her dedication has earned her national and international recognition, including numerous awards for her significant impact in rehabilitating trafficking survivors.

One of the key points Pallabi emphasized was the importance of raising awareness about human trafficking. Many people hold misconceptions about this issue, often considering it a distant problem that doesn't affect them. Pallabi stressed that human trafficking is pervasive and can impact anyone, regardless of their background. By initiating conversations and educating the public, we can combat the dismissive attitudes that allow trafficking to persist.

Our discussion turned to the vulnerability of children to trafficking. Pallabi highlighted that this issue transcends socioeconomic boundaries, affecting children from all backgrounds. Technology, while beneficial, can also facilitate trafficking by creating avenues for exploitation. Pallabi urged parents to build strong, loving relationships with their children and to be cautious of excessive reliance on technology and material possessions. She also expressed concerns about the negative impact of idle activities like gaming and the lack of employment opportunities, which can drive young individuals towards criminal activities.

This year's theme for World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is "Leave No Child Behind." Pallabi explained that children are the most exploited group in trafficking networks. She underscored the interconnectedness of poverty, unemployment, and illiteracy with trafficking, advocating for a holistic approach to address these root causes. Pallabi shared her experiences working with trafficking survivors, shedding light on the stigma and challenges they face within their communities.

Pallabi's family plays a crucial role in providing support, helping her balance her demanding work life with family responsibilities. Despite the emotional toll, Pallabi finds fulfillment in the progress and hope she brings to the lives of survivors.

Pallabi shared the various initiatives undertaken by her organization to support trafficking survivors. From setting up shops and vending machines to providing safe spaces, food, clothing, and training, the Impact and Dialogue Foundation is dedicated to creating sustainable solutions. The organization is powered by survivor leaders and field workers who actively work to prevent trafficking in their communities. Financial support comes from individual donations and fundraisers, with hopes for institutional funding in the future.

🎓 𝑬𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒖𝒃𝒍𝒊𝒄 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑬𝒏𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒄 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚

A significant part of our conversation focused on the need to educate the public about human trafficking. Pallabi emphasized changing public perceptions of the police and encouraged the use of Zero FIRs—allowing crimes to be reported at any police station, regardless of where the incident occurred. She highlighted the importance of dialogue and understanding, urging people to have conversations about trafficking and to listen to the harsh realities faced by victims.
